Piano storage in Surrey

Piano storage for upright and grand pianos

The piano is usually the one thing that doesn’t fit the plan. The sale closes, the new place isn’t ready, and everything else can wait in a locker. A 600 lb instrument with a lacquered finish can’t. It needs the same care going into storage that it needs on a move, and most storage companies don’t touch pianos at all. Local Movers Ltd has handled Surrey’s pianos for over 6 years, and our piano movers in Surrey are the same crew that wraps, stores and redelivers them. One call covers the whole loop.

The crews are ours, hired and trained by us. No subcontractors, no rented labour, no stranger learning on your baby grand. The trained movers who handle IKEA, Cozey and Samsung deliveries across the Lower Mainland are the ones lifting your piano. They know why a grand travels on its side, why the fallboard gets locked before the first lift, and why moving blankets go on before any shrink wrap ever touches the finish.

Storage itself is the calm part once the prep is right. Your piano sits indoors, blanketed and wrapped, in the same secure storage we use for full household moves. It stays wrapped for the whole term, whether that’s a two-week possession gap or a year while you’re away. Pricing follows one rule on every job. The moving legs are billed on the actual hours worked, broken down up front, and the storage term is quoted in writing before we book.

What we store

Piano storage options we offer

Short-term piano storage

Possession dates that miss by a week. Floor refinishing that needs the room empty. A staging job before the listing goes live. Short-term storage covers the gap. We pick the piano up, wrap it in padded blankets, and hold it indoors until the day you name. Most short stays run a few days to a few weeks, and redelivery books with one call.

Long-term piano storage

Downsizing to a condo and not ready to let the piano go. An estate that needs time to settle. A work posting out of province. Long-term storage keeps the instrument wrapped and indoors for months at a stretch, and it comes back out the way it went in. When you’re ready, we deliver it, reattach a grand’s legs and lyre, and set it exactly where you want it.

Upright and grand piano prep

An upright travels standing, strapped to a piano dolly with the fallboard locked. A grand comes apart first. Legs, lyre and pedals off, then the body rides on its side on a padded piano board. Both get moving blankets on every face before any wrap goes on, because plastic against a lacquered finish is how pianos get ruined. Prep is part of the service, not your job.

What piano storage costs in Surrey

Every piano storage call in Surrey starts with the same question. What will this cost? The answer hasn’t changed in six years. The pickup and the redelivery are billed on time, on the actual hours the crew works. There’s a minimum charge that gets the truck and crew to your door, and after that the clock runs in 30-minute increments. The storage term itself is quoted up front, in plain numbers, before we book anything.

You see the whole breakdown before the piano leaves your living room. The hourly rate, the crew size, the travel, the storage term, all of it in writing. It’s the same up-front breakdown we give IKEA and Cozey on their biggest jobs, and it’s why our bills match our estimates. On a piano storage job, four things swing the number.

Piano type and weight

An upright runs roughly 300 to 500 lb and moves with 2 or 3 movers. A grand can pass 1,000 lb and needs disassembly plus a bigger crew. The piano decides the crew, and the crew hours drive the moving cost.

Stairs and access

A ground-floor pickup with a straight path is the quickest job we do. A basement family room, a tight split-level landing or a third-floor walk-up adds crew time. Count your stairs before you call and your quote gets sharper.

How long you store

A two-week gap between possessions and a year overseas are different numbers, and you’ll have both in writing before pickup. No open-ended meter, no surprise on the way out.

The redelivery end

Redelivery is its own short move, billed the same honest way. A condo tower with a booked elevator moves fast. A new build with no clear walkway takes longer. Tell us about both ends and the estimate covers both.

That’s every number explained. Actual hours on each end, 30-minute increments after the minimum, the storage term in writing, nothing invented at the door. Call (778) 242-2877 with the piano’s make, where it sits now and how long you think you’ll need. You’ll have a real number in about 5 minutes.

Crew advice

9 piano storage tips from our Surrey crew

Six years of Surrey pianos taught us what saves customers money and what saves instruments. Here are nine things worth knowing before the truck arrives. Most of them cost you nothing.

1. Never store a piano in a garage

Surrey winters are wet, and a garage swings from damp to dry with every door lift. Soundboards are solid spruce and they move with the moisture. Indoor storage isn’t a luxury for a piano. It’s the whole point of the service.

2. Empty the bench and the piano

Sheet music, metronomes and whatever else lives in there comes out before pickup. The bench stores with the piano, but its contents ride better in a box you keep with you.

3. Lock the keyboard lid, or let us

A fallboard that slides open mid-carry is how keys chip. If yours locks, lock it and keep the key somewhere safe. If it doesn’t, our crew secures it as part of the wrap.

4. Photograph the finish before pickup

Two minutes with your phone. Walk around the piano and shoot every face in daylight. It protects both of us, and it takes the guesswork out of any question later.

5. Tune after redelivery, not before

Every move knocks a piano slightly out of tune, so a tuning before storage is money wasted. Let it settle in the new room for 2 to 4 weeks, then tune once. One appointment instead of two.

6. Know the make and model

A Yamaha U1 upright and a 6-foot grand are different jobs with different gear. The label is usually inside the lid or on the back panel. Give it to us at booking and the right crew arrives the first time.

7. Measure the redelivery end early

The piano fit out of the old place. That says nothing about the new one. Measure the tightest doorway and count the stairs at the destination before redelivery day, not on it.

8. Book tower elevators a week ahead

Pickups from the towers around Surrey City Centre go fast when the service elevator is padded and locked off. Strata offices usually book 2-hour windows, and weekends fill first.

9. Leave grand disassembly to us

Legs and lyres are the most-broken parts in do-it-yourself piano moves, and a dropped grand body is a write-off. Disassembly, the piano board and reassembly all sit inside the service. Don’t rent a truck for this one.

A common Surrey storage call

Five weeks between houses, with a piano on your hands

Here’s the shape of the call we get most. A family sells in Cloverdale, the buyers take possession at the end of the month, and the new house in South Surrey doesn’t complete for another five weeks. The furniture can wait in any locker. The piano can’t sit in one, and it definitely can’t ride out five damp weeks in a friend’s garage.

So we split it into three small jobs. On pickup day the crew locks the fallboard, blankets and wraps the piano, and loads it with the rest of the move. It goes into our secure storage wrapped, and it stays wrapped while the family closes on the new place. On redelivery day it comes off the truck last and goes into the front room first, set exactly where it’ll live. Three legs of work, one company, one clear breakdown of hours before any of it starts.

The same pattern fits the rest of Surrey. A Clayton Heights townhouse with three floors and the piano on the middle one. A downsize from a Fleetwood house into a City Centre tower, where the piano waits a month while the condo gets painted. Whatever your gap looks like, you don’t need a storage company plus a piano mover plus a delivery guy. You need one crew that does all three, and that’s exactly what this service is.

Piano Storage FAQ

Questions we get about piano storage

Do you offer both short-term and long-term piano storage in Surrey?

Yes. Short-term stays cover possession gaps, renovations and staging, usually a few days to a few weeks. Long-term storage runs months at a time for downsizing, estates or time away. Either way the piano is wrapped, stored indoors and redelivered by the same crew that picked it up.

How do you prepare a piano for storage?

The keyboard lid gets locked, every face gets padded moving blankets, and the wrap goes over the blankets, never against the finish. Uprights travel standing on a piano dolly. Grands come apart, legs, lyre and pedals off, and ride on a padded piano board. The piano stays wrapped for the whole storage term.

Can you store a grand piano?

Yes. Grands and baby grands are regular jobs for us. We disassemble them for transport, store the body wrapped on its board, and keep the legs, lyre and pedals padded and stored with it. On redelivery we reassemble everything and set the piano where you want it.

How much does piano storage in Surrey cost?

The pickup and redelivery are billed on time, on the actual hours the crew works, with a minimum charge and 30-minute increments after it. The storage term is quoted up front before we book. You get the full breakdown, hours and storage together, before the piano leaves your home.

Is my piano insured while it’s stored?

Local Movers Ltd is licensed and insured. Tell us the make and roughly what the piano is worth when you book, and we’ll walk you through exactly how coverage works for your move and your storage term before you commit to anything.

Will storage put my piano out of tune?

Any move affects tuning, storage or not. The strings hold around 20 tons of tension and they react to handling and to a new room. Skip the pre-move tuning, let the piano settle for 2 to 4 weeks after redelivery, then book one tuning. That’s the order piano technicians recommend.

Can you pick up a piano from a Surrey condo tower?

Yes. Tower pickups around City Centre and Whalley are routine for us. Book the service elevator with your strata, ask for the pads, and tell us the window. A locked-off elevator keeps the clock short and your bill smaller.

Do I need to be there for pickup and redelivery?

You or someone you trust should be at both ends to walk the crew in and sign off. The storage stretch in the middle needs nothing from you. If timing is tight, call us and we’ll work out access that fits your schedule.

How much notice do you need for pickup or redelivery?

A few days is usually enough on weekdays. Weekends fill fastest, so give us 5 to 7 days of notice if your dates are fixed. Redelivery out of storage books the same way, one call with the date and the address.

Need your piano stored in Surrey?

Picked up, wrapped, stored indoors and brought back by one local crew. Billed on actual time, broken down up front.
