Grand piano moving in Surrey

Grand Piano Moving Is Its Own Trade

A grand piano is the one thing in your house that punishes a shortcut. A baby grand runs 500 to 650 lb. A living room grand pushes 750. A concert grand can pass 1,100 lb, and most of that weight is a cast iron plate wrapped in a wooden case that scratches if you look at it wrong. The legs hold the piano up. They were never built to move it. That’s why a grand never travels on its own legs or casters, not even across the room.

We do it the way piano technicians want it done. Lid lowered and secured, case wrapped in thick moving blankets, lyre and pedals off, bass-side leg off, and the piano tilted onto a padded piano board. Strapped to the board, the weight rolls on a dolly and stays controlled on stairs. Grand piano work is the deep end of our piano moving service in Surrey, and it’s the crew we send our best people on.

Local Movers Ltd has spent over 6 years moving Surrey’s awkward and valuable pieces, from South Surrey living rooms to church halls and school stages. Our own crews, no subcontractors, the same trained movers behind our IKEA, Cozey and Samsung deliveries. Pricing is time-based, billed on the actual hours worked and broken down up front, so you know how the number is built before we touch a single key.

  • Piano board, straps and padded wrap on every grand
  • Disassembly, reassembly and levelling included
  • Floors, doorways and stair corners protected

What we move

Every Size of Grand, From Parlour to Stage

Baby Grand Piano Moving

The most common grand in Surrey homes. Under 5 feet 6 inches, usually 500 to 650 lb, and often bought used from another family’s living room. A Yamaha GB1K or a Kawai GL-10 gets the full treatment: wrapped, boarded, legs and lyre off, then levelled and reassembled where you want it. Same care whether it’s a new instrument or grandma’s.

Grand Piano Moving

Living room and parlour grands from 5 feet 6 inches to 7 feet, the Yamaha C3 and Steinway B class of instrument. More length means more leverage on every turn, so the route gets walked and measured before the lift. Doorways padded, floors protected, and the piano rides its board through the whole house.

Concert grands for venues and schools

Nine feet of piano at 900 to 1,200 lb calls for a bigger board, more straps and more movers. We move concert grands for churches, schools and halls across Surrey and the Lower Mainland, on your schedule, with the loading route planned through the building before anyone lifts.

What affects your grand piano moving cost in Surrey

Every piano call starts with the same question. What will this cost? Our answer never changes. Pricing is time-based, billed on the actual hours the crew works. There’s a minimum charge that covers the truck and crew to your door. After the minimum, the clock runs in 30-minute increments. You never pay for a rounded-up hour nobody worked, and you never get a flat-rate guess that was padded to protect us.

Before we book your piano, we break the price down up front. The hourly rate, the crew size, the travel time, all in plain numbers before anyone touches the instrument. It’s the same breakdown we give IKEA and Cozey on their biggest deliveries. Four things move the number on a grand more than anything else.

Size of the grand

A 500 lb baby grand is usually a 3-mover job. A 7-foot grand or a concert grand takes 4 movers, a bigger board and more time on every turn. We set the crew size when we quote, not on your doorstep.

Stairs, elevators, turns

A straight roll from living room to truck is the fastest piano move there is. A staircase with a landing can add an hour. In a tower, a booked and padded service elevator keeps the clock short.

Prep and reassembly

Legs, lyre and pedals come off, travel wrapped, and go back on level at the new home. That work sits inside the hourly rate, never a hidden fee. Plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes each side for a grand.

Access at both ends

Where the truck parks, how far the board rolls, how tight the door is. A rear-lane townhouse in Cloverdale moves differently than a wide South Surrey driveway. Photos of both ends make your quote sharper.

That’s the whole pricing story. Actual hours, 30-minute increments after the minimum charge, the breakdown in your hands before we start. Call (778) 242-2877 with the piano’s make, size and what the path looks like at both ends. You’ll have an honest number in about 5 minutes.

Crew advice

10 grand piano moving tips from our Surrey crew

Six years of Surrey grands, baby grands and stage pianos taught us what saves customers real money and real heartache. Here are 10 things worth doing before our truck pulls up. Most of them take time off your bill.

1. Know your piano’s length

Open the lid and measure from the front of the keyboard to the tail. Under 5’6″ is a baby grand, 9 feet is a concert grand, and everything between moves differently. That one number sets the crew size and the board.

2. Never roll it on its own casters

The brass casters on a grand are decorative at best. Rolling a 600 lb piano on them can shear a leg and drop the instrument. If it has to move even a metre before we arrive, leave it where it is and tell us.

3. Measure the tightest doorway

On its board, a grand travels on its side, so the case depth is what has to clear the frame. Two minutes with a tape measure on your narrowest door and hallway turn can save the crew 30 on move day.

4. Book the elevator the week before

Surrey condo towers reserve service elevators in 2-hour windows and weekends fill first. Ask your strata for pads and a key. A locked-off elevator is the single biggest time-saver on any tower piano move.

5. Empty the bench and pack the music

Benches travel separately, and loose sheet music scatters. Box the music, wrap the bench cushion, and if the bench has a hinged lid, tape it shut with painter’s tape so the finish doesn’t lift.

6. Leave the legs to us

Don’t unscrew the legs or the lyre yourself. Each one comes off in a set order while the weight is supported, and one wrong sequence puts 600 lb on the floor. Disassembly is part of the job, inside the hourly rate.

7. Send 3 photos with your quote request

One of the piano, one of the path out, one of where the truck parks. Those photos let us size the crew right the first time. A 3-mover crew that should’ve been 4 costs you more hours, not less.

8. Pick the spot before we arrive

An inside wall, away from heat vents, baseboard heaters and big south-facing windows. BC’s swing from wet winters to dry summer heat is hard on a soundboard, and the right wall saves you tunings for years.

9. Book the tuner for week 3, not day 1

A well-moved grand goes out of tune from the new room, not the truck. Let the soundboard settle into the new humidity for 2 to 3 weeks, then tune once. Tuning on day one usually means paying twice.

10. Book mornings, book ahead

Piano moves get our most experienced crew, and mornings have slack if a staircase runs long. Weekends book out first, so call 5 to 7 days ahead, especially at month-end when all of Surrey moves at once.

A City Centre piano move

A baby grand up a Surrey City Centre tower

The towers going up around Surrey City Centre have changed what piano moving looks like here. Ten years ago a grand meant a living room and a front door. Now it means a lobby, a corner into the elevator core, a service elevator with a 7-foot ceiling, and a hallway turn on the 30th floor. The piano doesn’t get smaller. The building does.

So the move gets planned like a delivery route, which is exactly how our crews are trained to think. Strata books us the service elevator in a 2-hour window. We pad the elevator and the lobby corners before the truck opens. The baby grand comes up on its board, on its side, wrapped in blankets with the legs and lyre travelling separately. Inside the suite, legs go back on in order, the piano gets levelled, and the fallboard comes uncovered last.

A tower move like that is billed the same way as every job we run. Actual hours, crew sized to the piano and the building, the breakdown given up front. If your building needs an insurance certificate for the strata, ask when you book and we’ll have it ready before move day.

Grand Piano Moving FAQ

Questions we get about grand piano moving

How much does it cost to move a grand piano in Surrey?

Grand piano moves are billed on time, on the actual hours the crew works. There’s a minimum charge that covers the truck and crew, then the clock runs in 30-minute increments. We break the rate, crew size and travel time down for you up front, so the bill matches the estimate. We never quote a flat rate on a piano.

How do you move a grand piano without damaging it?

On a piano board, never on its legs. We lower and secure the lid, wrap the case in thick moving blankets, remove the lyre and pedals, take the bass-side leg off and tilt the piano onto a padded board. Strapped to that board, the weight rolls on a dolly instead of resting on legs that were never built to travel.

Do you move baby grand pianos?

Yes. Baby grands are the piano we move most in Surrey. They run under 5 feet 6 inches and usually 500 to 650 lb, and they get the exact same treatment as a full grand. Board, wrap, disassembly, reassembly and levelling at the new home, all inside the hourly rate.

Can you move a grand piano into a condo tower?

Yes. Towers around Surrey City Centre and Guildford are regular piano jobs for us. Book the service elevator with your strata, and we handle the rest. Padded elevator, protected lobby corners, and the piano travels on its board the whole way.

Do you take the legs off a grand piano to move it?

Yes, that’s the correct way. The legs and the lyre come off, get wrapped separately and travel padded. A grand’s legs are built to hold still weight, not to survive a doorway. We reattach everything and level the piano at the other end.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Plan on a tuning, but not right away. The move itself rarely knocks a well-handled grand far out of tune. The new room does, because humidity and temperature settle the soundboard over a couple of weeks. Most Surrey piano technicians suggest tuning 2 to 3 weeks after the move.

Can you move a concert grand for a church, school or venue?

Yes. Concert grands run around 9 feet and 900 to 1,200 lb, and they need a bigger board, more straps and more hands. We size the crew to the piano and plan the route through the building before we lift. Tell us the make and model when you call.

Do you move grand pianos up or down stairs?

Yes. Stairs are where a piano board earns its keep. We control the piano on the board with straps and enough movers for the weight, one step at a time. Count your stairs and tell us about any landings when you book, so we send the right crew size.

Who actually shows up to move my piano?

Our own crew. No subcontractors, no day labour. The same trained movers who handle our IKEA, Cozey and Samsung deliveries are the ones carrying your grand. They’ve done this before, and it shows in how they read a doorway before they lift.
