Local Movers Ltd crew wrapping a heavy item on a Surrey move, the work that sets the hours on an hourly moving bill

Surrey Moving Costs

How Much Do Movers Cost in Surrey, BC?

Movers in Surrey are billed by the hour, on the actual time the crew works, not on a flat rate. Three things decide your number: how many movers are on the job, how many hours the job really takes, and the travel time to and from your address. Everything else, stairs, elevator bookings, a long walk to the truck, packing that never got finished, changes the number only because it changes the hours.

The short answer

Surrey movers charge for time, not a flat rate

How the number is built

The equation is short. Your crew’s hourly rate, multiplied by the hours worked, plus the travel time between your two addresses. Nothing else sits in the base number.

So a flat-rate quote on a local move should make you pause. Nobody knows the hours before seeing what you own and where it goes, so that number is either padded for the worst case or it gets “adjusted” on the day. The Canadian Association of Movers says to stay away from anyone who will not inspect the job before quoting. That is why how we run a Surrey move starts with a breakdown before the truck leaves, not one number with nothing behind it.

The four levers

What actually drives the price of a Surrey move

Crew size: two movers, three movers, four

Two movers and a truck is the standard unit, so it is the price people see quoted. The catch: a bigger crew often costs less in total, because the clock runs shorter. Boxly’s February 2026 analysis found three-person crews carry a higher hourly median yet often finish faster, potentially lowering total costs. A one-bed apartment is usually a two-mover job. A three-bed townhouse, or a detached home with a basement suite, is where a third mover pays for itself. Stairs are the bottleneck, and a third body keeps the truck loading while two carry.

How much stuff you have, and how it is packed

This is the biggest lever you hold. Boxed, taped, labelled and stacked near the door means the crew carries. Loose items and a half-packed closet mean the crew sorts first and carries second, and sorting is slower every trip. Packing done on move day is billable time, the same as loading. The crew brings wardrobe boxes, furniture blankets, shrink wrap, four-wheel dollies and appliance dollies.

Stairs, elevators and the walk to the truck

Surrey City Centre holds the largest concentration of high-rises south of the Fraser, from 3 Civic Plaza at 50 storeys to the King George Hub towers. A tower move is a booked service elevator and a loading bay, not a driveway. That window is the real clock. Buildings commonly give three to four hours and want the booking two to four weeks ahead, with June through August filling fastest. In a three-level townhouse complex, every item goes up or down two flights. Clayton Heights is the known parking pinch, where local guides warn buyers to expect a walk to the front door.

Distance and access at both ends

Travel time between the two addresses is billable, and it belongs on any honest hourly quote. Movers.ca notes travel charges are common across the Canadian market. The Surrey Langley SkyTrain build has single-lane traffic in effect 24 hours a day along most of the Fraser Highway corridor, with overnight stoppages between 164 Street and 184 Street into late September 2026. Crescent Beach, at the far end, has only two road accesses, both crossing the BNSF railway.

The clock

How the hours get counted

Our clock, in plain words. You are billed on the actual hours worked, in 30-minute increments after the minimum charge, and the full breakdown lands on your quote before you book.

Get it in writing, from us or anyone. The Canadian Association of Movers says a written estimate should name the hours to be billed, the hourly rate charged, and an itemized list of services and materials. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs puts it in fewer words. Get your costs and terms in writing.

An hourly bill only works if the crew is honest with the clock. We run our own crews, never subcontractors, and those same crews handle deliveries for IKEA, Cozey and Samsung.

Market context

What Surrey moving rates look like across the market

We do not publish a rate. It depends on your crew size and your job. Two published sources give the market context.

A February 2026 Boxly analysis of 384 active Vancouver moving companies put the market median at $127 an hour for two movers and a truck, with the field spanning $89 to $200. Movers.ca, updated April 2026, puts most two-person crews with a truck between $120 and $200 an hour, and notes that minimums of two to three hours and a travel charge are common across the Canadian market.

Those are other companies’ market figures. Local Movers gives you your own number, broken down before the job starts.

The math

How to work out roughly what your move will cost

Run it in hours first

Hours on site, plus travel time, multiplied by the rate for your crew size, equals your total.

A two-bed Newton townhouse that takes four hours on site plus half an hour of travel bills as four and a half hours at your crew’s rate. Newton’s strata townhouses run three levels, so the stairs set that number. A studio in a City Centre tower is a different shape, where the elevator window sets the pace.

Watch for these

Edge cases that change the number

  • A piano, a gun safe, or one oversized item. Specialty gear and extra hands.
  • A long carry when the truck cannot get near the door. Clayton Heights visitor parking is the classic version.
  • No elevator booking, or a strata window that closes at 5pm on a weekday.
  • A certificate of insurance naming the strata. Plenty of Surrey towers want one, and without it the crew gets turned away.
  • Packing supplies and materials.
  • Storage, or a two-stop move with a load day and a delivery day.
  • Fraser Highway. Single-lane 24/7 through the SkyTrain build into late September 2026.
  • Month end. BC tenant notice has to land a month ahead and before rent is due, so leases stack up on the last day.
  • Last-minute date changes.

Surrey moving cost FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do movers in Surrey charge by the hour or a flat rate?

Hourly, on a local move. Nobody knows the exact hours before seeing the job. We bill on the actual hours worked, in 30-minute increments after the minimum charge, with the breakdown on your quote.

Do I pay for the drive time?

Yes. Travel time between the two addresses is part of an hourly move and sits on your breakdown. Movers.ca notes a travel charge is standard across the Canadian market.

Is it cheaper to book two movers or three?

Often three, because the clock runs shorter. The rate goes up with the crew, but the total usually goes down on anything bigger than a one-bed.

How many hours does a two-bedroom move in Surrey usually take?

It depends on stairs, elevator access and how well it is boxed. Fully packed with a driveway at both ends is a different job from a third-floor townhouse with a long walk from visitor parking. We estimate your hours once we see what you own.

Do you charge more on weekends or at month end?

Month end is the busiest window in Surrey, because BC tenancies mostly end on the last day. Book early. For your number, ask us. We quote your move, not a calendar surcharge.

How do I get an exact price for my move?

Call or send the details. We go through the inventory, the access at both ends and the timing, then put the breakdown in writing before you commit.
