How Far in Advance Should You Book Movers in Surrey?

Book your Surrey movers four to six weeks ahead for a move between May and September, and two to three weeks ahead the rest of the year. Month-end is the exception all year round.

BC tenancy law aims almost every outgoing renter at the same clock on the same day, 1 p.m. on the last day of the month, so those dates fill first and need peak-season lead time even in January. Here is why month-end jams, what changes in a tower, and what to do if you’re late.

The short answer, season by season

May through September, book 4 to 6 weeks out

The Canadian Association of Movers says most movers need at least two weeks’ notice with a firm date, and that more time is better in the busy season, which CAM puts at May to September. Two weeks is the floor, not the Surrey summer answer. CAM’s moving timeline help sheet has you picking a mover eight weeks out and confirming four weeks out. Summer plus month-end plus a Friday is the hardest slot on the calendar, and it goes first.

October through April, 2 to 3 weeks is usually enough

Off-peak, a weekday date mid-month is the easiest booking of the year. Two to three weeks gets you the date, the arrival window you asked for, and a crew matched to the home. A Tuesday on the 12th is a different world from a Friday on the 30th.

Why the last days of the month book out first in Surrey

BC’s Residential Tenancy Act, section 45(1), ties a tenant’s notice to end a periodic tenancy to a date no earlier than one month after the landlord gets it, on the day before rent is payable. Rent is due on the 1st in most Surrey tenancies, so the tenancy ends on the 30th or the 31st. The Province calls that a complete rental month, not simply 30 days’ notice.

Then section 37(1) sets the clock:

“Unless a landlord and tenant otherwise agree, the tenant must vacate the rental unit by 1 p.m. on the day the tenancy ends.”

That’s the traffic jam. Every outgoing renter in Surrey is aimed at the same hour on the same day, so crews, trucks, elevators and loading bays get bid on inside 48 hours.

Buyers hit it from the other side. A BC completion-day guide from Rain City Properties puts possession one to three days after completion, and says keys on a same-day completion often arrive between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Its advice is blunt: don’t plan your movers for 9:00 a.m. on a same-day completion.

Two fixes. Book month-end earlier than feels necessary, or shift a day or two off the peak date.

The Surrey-specific squeeze points

In a tower, book the building before you book the truck

The truck and the building are two separate bookings, and the building is the slower one. Your date is only as real as the elevator window behind it, so we ask for the building’s slot before we lock the crew.

High-rise towers in Surrey City Centre and Whalley, where a move needs a booked service elevator window

Published strata elevator guidance for Metro Vancouver buildings puts the minimum at 7 to 14 days ahead, recommends 3 to 4 weeks, and notes that in peak season many buildings allow only one move per day. CAM’s timeline agrees, putting the freight elevator at three weeks out, a week ahead of its own four-week step for confirming your mover.

Whalley and Surrey City Centre hold the largest concentration of high-rises south of the Fraser River. 3 Civic Plaza runs 50 storeys and the King George Hub cluster sits beside King George Station, so almost every move in that corridor is an elevator-window move.

More towers means more moves chasing the same Saturdays

Surrey City Centre grew about 25 percent between 2016 and 2021 to more than 35,000 people, with 21 towers under construction and roughly 70 more approved, according to Daily Hive. Every tower that finishes drops another wave of move-ins onto the same dates.

What booking actually locks in

A confirmed booking holds four things: the date, the arrival window, the crew size and the truck. We don’t hold a date without those settled, because crew size is what the estimate is built on.

Pricing is time-based. You’re billed on the actual hours the crew works, in 30-minute increments after the minimum charge, and the full breakdown is on your quote before you book. No flat rate and no guessing.

Crew size comes from how much there is to carry, not from the calendar. That’s spelled out on the page covering how our Surrey local moving crews work, with the hour ranges behind it. A packed one-bedroom apartment usually runs 3 to 4 hours with 2 movers, and a full three-bedroom house runs 6 to 8 hours with a crew of 3. Crew size times hours worked, plus travel on the clock.

What to do if you did not book ahead

Sometimes the date was never yours. Possession slips, subject removal runs late, the seller wants one more day.

If it’s month-end and only the awkward slots are left, take one. An early start or a mid-week date opens things up, and a smaller crew on a fully packed home often beats a bigger crew on a home still half in cupboards. In a tower, check the elevator first. If the building allows one move a day and it’s gone, the truck date doesn’t matter.

Call anyway. Cancellations happen and month-end plans move around. We answer the phone seven days a week and we’ll tell you straight whether the date is real. Two things not to do: don’t hold two moving companies on the same date, and don’t book a crew before the building gives you a window.

A booking timeline you can use

Here is the moving timeline published by the Canadian Association of Movers, in its order.

  1. Eight weeks out: pick a mover after getting at least three quotes and checking references and reviews.
  2. Four weeks out: confirm the booking with your moving company.
  3. Three weeks out: reserve the freight elevator in your building for moving day.
  4. Two weeks out: keep packing, arrange plants and pets, get rid of anything movers can’t carry.
  5. The day before: contact the mover to confirm arrival time and flag anything that changed.

For a month-end or summer date in Surrey, shift the whole list two weeks earlier. Four weeks is already too late for the last Friday in July.

FAQs

Is two weeks enough notice to book movers in Surrey?

Off-peak and mid-month, yes. CAM’s floor is two weeks with a firm date, and a quiet Tuesday in February clears it. At month-end or in summer, two weeks means taking whatever is left.

What is the busiest day of the month to move in Surrey?

The last day. Section 37(1) of BC’s Residential Tenancy Act puts tenants out by 1 p.m. on the day the tenancy ends, and most tenancies end on the 30th or 31st because rent is due on the 1st.

Can you book movers a week in advance?

Often yes, especially mid-month on a weekday, and it costs nothing to call. In a tower it’s usually the elevator, not the truck, that blocks you, since buildings want 7 to 14 days minimum.

What time do I have to be out of my Surrey rental?

By 1 p.m. on the day the tenancy ends, unless your landlord agrees otherwise. That’s section 37(1) of BC’s Residential Tenancy Act, word for word, and it’s why morning slots go first at month-end.

What happens if my possession date changes after I book?

Call us as soon as you know. Possession in BC often lands one to three days after completion, and keys can show up mid-afternoon, so slips are normal. We’d rather move the booking than have a crew waiting outside a locked house.

Should I book the truck or the elevator first?

The elevator. Buildings want 7 to 14 days minimum, 3 to 4 weeks is the safer ask, and many allow only one move per day in peak season. Get the building’s window, then we lock the crew to it.
