Three level Surrey townhomes with garage entries and interior stairs, the kind of stair move Local Movers Ltd runs every week

Moving Costs, Answered

Do Movers Charge Extra for Stairs?

No. On a time-based move there’s no stair fee, no per-step charge, and no per-flight line on your bill. Stairs turn into minutes, and minutes are what you’re paying for. The honest caveat is that it depends entirely on how your mover prices the job. On a flat-rate or weight-based quote, a stair carry really is a separate line, and it usually kicks in past the first flight. That’s the part nobody explains.

Time-based billing, breakdown up front

The short answer

On an hourly move, stairs aren’t billed as an event. They’re billed as duration. A flight between the truck and your door doesn’t change how many trips the crew makes, it just makes every trip longer. Twenty boxes is still twenty trips.

Our pricing is time-based, billed on the actual hours the crew works, with a minimum charge that covers the truck and crew to your door and 30-minute increments after that. You get the rate, the crew size and the travel time broken down up front, never a flat-rate guess.

The key answer

Stairs don’t add a fee to a time-based move. They add minutes, and minutes are what the bill is made of.

It depends on how your mover prices the job

Hourly, time-based movers

Nothing gets added for stairs. No per-step fee, no per-flight fee, no stair surcharge, no “difficult access” line. If a bed frame or a sectional comes apart to make the turn at the landing, that work sits inside the same hourly rate.

Flat-rate and weight-based quotes

This is where a stair fee actually lives. It shows up as a stair carry or a long carry, usually only past the first flight.

The Canadian Association of Movers lists stairs and long carries among the extra charges that turn up on a moving bill. The association also notes a mover can revise a price when circumstances weren’t written into the estimate, and names flights of stairs as an example. It adds that Canada’s moving industry is unregulated, so there are no standard rates. That’s why a stair fee is firm policy at one company and doesn’t exist at another.

One more thing. On a flat-rate quote a stair fee is the mover pricing a risk in advance, and you pay for it whether the risk shows up or not. On an hourly job there’s nothing to price in advance, because the clock already measures it.

The thing that actually costs people money

Stairs nobody mentioned before the quote. An estimate built on “second floor apartment” that turns out to be a third-floor walk-up with a mid-landing turn gets rewritten on move day, no matter who’s moving you. The fix isn’t a cheaper quote. It’s two minutes of description before you book.

How stairs actually eat the clock

Five things happen on stairs that don’t on a flat carry.

  • 1Every trip up is a trip back down empty. A staircase doubles the walking, not the carrying.
  • 2The turn beats the step count. A straight run keeps two movers in rhythm. A switchback with a low ceiling turns a king mattress into a two-attempt job. The BC Building Code only asks for 860 mm of width and 1,950 mm of headroom on a stair inside a home. That’s about 34 inches wide. Nothing in your bedroom was designed around it.
  • 3Big pieces come apart to make the turn and go back together at the other end. Beds, wardrobes, sectionals, dining tables. All inside the hourly rate.
  • 4Protection goes down before the first lift. Banisters padded, stair corners wrapped, floor runners on every level. Not billed as an extra.
  • 5Some days the truck matters more than the staircase. Our 26-foot truck needs about 40 feet of curb, and a long carry stacks on top of every flight.

What this looks like in a Surrey townhouse

Newer Surrey townhomes stack a garage on the bottom, kitchen and living space on the main floor, bedrooms on top. Almost everything you own travels at least one flight, usually two.

That layout is why our townhouse moving crews in Surrey are usually sized at three movers instead of two. The extra pair of hands cuts the trip count, and on a stair job the trip count is the bill.

A packed and ready 3-bedroom townhome with decent access usually lands in the 4 to 7 hour range with a 3-mover crew. Tight turns, a long carry, or packing left until move day push it up. A clear garage bay off the rear lane is the fastest load a townhome has, because it takes a whole flight out of the job. A blocked lane puts the stairs back in.

Same crew that handles IKEA, Cozey and Samsung deliveries, so what comes apart for the staircase goes back together the same day.

How the math works

Your total is crew size multiplied by the hours the crew actually works, plus the travel time named in your breakdown. Stairs move the hours. They don’t move the rate, and they don’t add a line.

Which leads somewhere most people don’t expect. On a stair move a bigger crew is often the smaller bill. A third mover cuts the trip count, the hours drop, and the hours are what you’re billed on. Sizing a stair job down to save money usually costs more.

Edge cases

Basement suites and walk-out entries

Exterior stairs, tighter turns, and nowhere to set a heavy piece down halfway. Slower work. Still time, still no surcharge.

Towers with a booked service elevator

No stairs, but a hard clock. A two or three hour strata window is the one case where access changes the crew size instead of the hours. On high-rise moves in Surrey City Centre we plan the crew around the elevator booking and the loading bay. That’s what the day lives or dies on.

Loading or unloading only

You’ve got the truck, you need the hands. Same logic. Stairs are hours, not a fee.

What if the stairs are worse than we were told?

The clock is the clock. The crew works the hours the job takes, and no penalty line gets added at the bottom. More stairs means more time, that’s all. The way to keep an estimate close to the final number is to describe the access before you book.

Tell us this before you book

Say how many flights there are at each end, and whether it’s a straight run or a switchback with a mid-landing turn. Tell us if the load comes out of a garage or a front door, how close the truck can park, and whether an elevator is booked and for how long. Photos of the staircase and the loading spot beat any description. Send them with your quote request, or call (778) 242-2877 and walk us through it. The breakdown you get back will match the day.

Stairs and moving costs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a stair fee on a time-based move?

No. No stair line, no per-step charge, no difficult-access fee. Stairs land in the hours, and the hours are what you’re billed on. The breakdown you get before move day shows the rate, the crew size and the travel time. The staircase adds nothing to it.

How much time does a flight of stairs actually add?

It depends on the turn more than the step count, and it hits every trip instead of once. A staircase doubles the walking on each load. A switchback with a low ceiling slows the big pieces most, because they get stood up, turned, and often taken apart.

Do movers charge per step or per flight?

Some do. It shows up on flat-rate and weight-based quotes as a stair carry, usually only past the first flight. On an hourly job it doesn’t exist. Either way, get the access written into your estimate before move day, so nothing gets rewritten on the day itself.

Does an elevator make a move cheaper than stairs?

Usually faster, not automatically cheaper. A service elevator takes out the climb but adds a hard clock, and a shared elevator can be slower than a clean staircase. If your strata gives you a two or three hour slot, we size the crew to clear the unit inside it.

Do I pay extra if my furniture has to come apart to fit the stairs?

No extra fee. Taking a bed, a wardrobe or a sectional apart to turn a staircase, then rebuilding it at the other end, is part of the hourly work. Same crew that handles IKEA, Cozey and Samsung deliveries, so it’s routine.

What happens if I forget to mention the stairs when I book?

The job takes the hours it takes, so the time goes up. No penalty line gets added. Movers can revise a price when something wasn’t written into the estimate, so two minutes describing the stairs keeps your quote and your bill close together.
