So the honest answer is an hour count, not a price, and that hour count is what the whole bill gets built from. It is why two 3-bedroom houses on the same street can land in very different places. We bill on the actual hours your move takes, in 30-minute increments after the minimum charge, and you get the full breakdown before anyone picks up a box. Never a flat-rate quote. Here is how those hours add up on a Surrey 3-bed.
The math is simple. Crew size times the hourly rate you were quoted, times the hours on the clock, plus the travel between the two addresses. The clock starts when the crew walks the house with you and stops when the last box is placed. After the minimum charge you are billed in half hours, not rounded up to the next full hour.
Here is the part nobody explains. A bigger crew is not automatically a bigger bill. Boxly’s May 2026 review puts two movers and a truck at a median of $127 an hour across the Vancouver market, and a three-person crew at a median of $170. Boxly then runs the comparison itself, and the three-person crew finishes in fewer hours and lands slightly cheaper overall. The pricier crew came out cheaper. That is what happens when the thing you are buying is time. The cheapest hourly rate is not the cheapest move.
“3-bedroom” is not one house in this city. Surrey has three versions of it, and each one moves at a different speed.
The detached stock in a neighbourhood like Newton runs 3 to 4 bedrooms at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft, built between the 1960s and the 1990s, and plenty carry a legal suite. So you get a full basement, a stair run, plus a garage and a shed that never make it onto anybody’s inventory. Boxes out of a basement cost minutes each, and minutes are the billing unit.
Surrey’s 1990s and 2000s strata complexes run 3-bedroom units around 1,150 to 1,350 sq ft. Fewer boxes than the detached house, more stairs per box, because the living space is stacked over three levels. Add narrow driveways and visitor parking that has to be cleared with the strata.
Then the big ones, Panorama Ridge style homes at roughly 2,500 to 3,500 sq ft, most built mid-1980s through the 2000s. Same bedroom count, different job. Longer carry to the truck, more furniture to take apart.

Walk the whole house on the call, basement, garage and shed included. Those are the spaces that get forgotten and then blow the hour count. Ask for three things by name: the hourly rate, the crew size, and the minimum charge. Ask what gets billed for travel. Then get it in writing. The Government of Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs says to get estimates from at least three reputable movers, and the costs and terms in writing before you commit. Consumer Protection BC goes further and says plainly that it does not regulate moving companies in BC. Where nobody licenses movers, a written breakdown is your only real protection.
